The Death Of A Hair Stylist

Hairstylist lack of education

I was speaking to a salon owner yesterday and we were talking about what we thought was the “death” of hair stylists and salon owners.  Our conversation went on for hours about this issue.

Before I tell you what the “Death” is let me ask you a question.

If you own your own salon would you rather:

1.  be an awesome artistic hair stylist who can make everybody look good

OR

2.  mediocre hair stylist who has plenty of business skills

If your answer is #1 then you might want to rethink becoming a salon or business owner.  This is not meant to be discouraging.  The truth is a mediocre stylist with business skills and education is more likely to be successful at operating and profiting from salon ownership than the “baddest” hair stylist in the city.

The “DEATH” of many hair stylists who are salon owners is that they lack the business skills and education to sustain.  Unfortunately, most beauty schools do not teach enough on operating your own business.  Being a hair stylist and owning a salon is two different skill sets.  Cosmetology school teaches you how to care for hair.  It is up to you to invest in yourself with business classes before you go and open a salon.

If you are not willing to take business and marketing classes before opening your business you are putting a lot of money, time and energy at risk.  So many professionals think it is easy but they quickly find out it’s work, time and skill outside of “doing hair”.

Do you know the 5 marketing mistakes that keep salon owners poor?

To Your Success,

Natalie
